How Allie Signorelli Has Used Social Media to Spread the News About Parkinson's Disease
Taking a "modern" approach to advocating for Parkinson's Disease research and finding a cure was never something Allie Signorelli thought would be her path, but she's taken the task on with zest...
As I began to write more about technology’s impact on our day-to-day life in recent years, my sister was grappling with a diagnosis of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. Her experience of this new physical and emotional challenge, coupled with the reality that most of us will face some sort of short- or long-term disability in our lives, became the inspiration for FromAtoSHE.
As I wrote about recently on my Substack AI for Families, and to quote a professor of robotics at NYU: “technology is not value free.” That is to say we all need to weigh in on what innovation brings to our lives and not just create and innovate for the sake of it. Beyond the "Oohs and aahs” we need to really think about how technology innovation enhances our lives.
Meet Allie
My sister has approached her new condition with a fresh and modern view. She’s used social media as a vehicle to communicate with a larger, more diverse, community of those with the condition, and their carers. She’s gotten involved in the race to find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, and she’s explored how new technology can help those with all brain disorders.
I wanted to share a collection of stories related to the work Allie is doing, and how much of what you’ll hear here will be a first-hand account of how technology, science and innovation are playing a part in her journey.
We can all benefit from the experience of others no matter the particulars of a given condition. Hopefully this will serve as inspiration into how we can start to look at technology through a “value” based lens. More about Allie’s journey:
